Default new motherboard - socket 939 or socket 754 ?

Do I take it the 939 is the latest and greatest and the natural successor to socket 754 ?

Need a new CPU & board for a mate who's upgrading.

Or is the Pentium the way to go ?

Fuchsrohre,

If your mate is a heavy gamer and wants the fastest core - then 939 single core CPUs (4000, FX55, FX57 etc..)

If he wants the PC to be jack of all trades, X2, again 939, look at X2 3800 and X2 4400

And note, skt M2 is out Q1 or Q2 next year.

If your upgrading now it makes sense to go 939 and PCI-E, cos at least the gfx card will work on the M2 boards.

There are some socket 939 motherboards which have the facility to be upgraded for the next gen CPUs, so check the specs before you buy.
I'm in the process of upgrade myself and have found a board which does this and has both AGP and PCI-e graphics card slots which means I don't have to shell out on a new graphics card just yet (this Asrock board plus its only £50)

Socket 939 is not really a successor to socket 754. Socket 939 is a single-CPU only version of socket 940, which was released at the same time as socket 754. As such, socket 939 has a better memory controller etc. Socket A is beiong phased out, which will leave socket 754 for the cheap CPUs, socket 939 for mainstream, and socket 940 for multiplie CPUs. Socket M2 will be along soon for two-core CPUs. So go socket 939.
