No icons or anything on start-up
Wife just called to say that when she turns on the home pc all she gets is the background come up, no icons, no start menu at the bottom of the screen, nothing. So all she can do is turn it off/on again. The mouse pointer is still there & moveable though.....any ideas??

What OS? XP?
Get her to boot into safemode n see if she can see the desktop. If she can then get her to check whats loading up in Start/run/msconfig. Check for anything out of the ordinary. If theres something obvious remove it. If not get hold of ms-antispyware and run it.
Worst case you might need to reinstall the OS. Or try a system restore point, assuming its on and XP.

Agree with the above
First check to see if you have installed something recently. If so, remove that when you boot to safe mode.
Otherwise, its time for lots of spyware and virus scanning Then a roll back to previous restore points.
