G3 and OS 9.2 - how do I...
get the bloody thing to boot from CD? Have been inserting the OS cd and holding down C while it boots but it just boots from the hard drive
Tried resetting the PRAM by pressing the 4 keys I looked up on the web but still wont boot from CD
Can't use the current build as its got a log on with an account no one knows the password to and it needs to be wiped and start again except none of us know anything about Macs.
At the moment its serving as a foot rest under my desk until I can rebuild the thing.
Any ideas?

Try holding down the option/alt key when you boot the machine, you might see a boot loader screen which displays the items you can boot from, select the item you want and click the left pointing arrow icon.
Command key = picture of Apple or Cloverleaf like symbol
Option/Alt key = picture of, umm, well, looks a bit like a set of railway points but with only one track, if that makes any sense.
Layout of extended keyboard is usually (bottom line from left to right):
control key, option key, command key, space bar, command key, option key, control key.
If all of that lot does not work then it sounds as though the CD you have isn't bootable, or the little darling of a machine does not want to boot from it. If you have another OS cd then try that.
If you do get it to boot from an OS X CD you do not need to reinstall the OS, unless you really want to that is. There is a 'reset password' option availble from the menus on the first install screen, so you can reset the password of the user (it'll show you the user name too) and then login as that user, and/or create a new account, etc.
If you need more info, drop me an email

Daryl yes nicked the hard drive out my colleagues G4 so solved that issue - now he needs a hard drive
Cheers Markus, that helps with the keys and will try again tomorrow. Tried two cd's, one OS 8.5 and one OS 9 both of which say hold down C to boot from but nothing happens.
Maybe a dodgey CD drive but I doubt it as these machines were being used by the business up until recently and they would have said if they didn't work.

OK well its still not sorted, think its the CD player that the issue and wont boot from it so will try a different CD ROM.
What I also want to know is can you get a normal IDE drive to work in a MAC - ie are there tools to put the apple foot print on a standard ide drive from a PC? Or do you have to buy specific apple hard drives?
