Macromedia stuff is very good, as is all the adobe range of products. But creating graphics is not a 5 minute job. It all depends what sort of things you want to create. Adobe photoshop is the best package for creating web graphics.

you can d/l most if not all the macromedia software from their website as a 30 free trial. And Macromedia let you try the whole program, not just bits of it.
Adobe software is very good for producing graphics and minipulating (sp?) graphics. As said before, it not a 5 min job. I use PS quite a lot and i still don't know every 'trick' in the book so to speak.
