How much RAM do you have?
Set the virtual memory to custom and put it to double your RAM max and min (e.g. min 512mb, max 512mb if you have 256mb etc.)
In addition, you've possibly got some ram hungry stuff running or lots of crap soaking up your resources.

The other thing to check is how much space you have left on your hard drive. Virtual Memory is what is used when there isn't enough RAM available to run programs. This means programs are swapped filed to the Hard Disk Drive. If you have win XP then you should really be using at least 256MB RAM and if running more than a couple of prgrams at a time then your looking at 512MB - 1GB of RAM to be running things well.
