Outlook 2003 problem...
I have two machines (well more than this but for the example its 2!) that are accessing a group mailbox. Both machines are set to access the mailbox with on-line mode instead of cached mode. They have the same image on both machines and the views and settings in Outlook are therefore the same. All software, everything is exactly the same on all the machines. However they are 2 different models of Dell Optiplex, one a gx270 and one a gx280.
Now the issue, if you send a file to the group mailbox with an attachment in it the gx280 can have the email clicked on and it will show in the reading pane view in 2 seconds. The gx270 accessing the same email will take over a minute for it to show in the reading pane and hang Outlook until it displays.
Now before anyone says this is due to the gx280 being a better spec'd machine there is a Compaq Deskpro which is far older than any of the Dell's and it too also views the email in the reading pane within 2 seconds. It is not a processor/memory difference in specs.
Why/how is this happening? Any ideas anyone?
P.S. It has been tested with both hyperthreading on and off and it makes no difference.

Anything to do with the build images? which machine was the build taken from and is the chipsets the same between gx270 and gx280?
How is the gx270 at accessing a local PST file with some mail?
Could be network configuration on the gx270 machine.

Ozzy unfortunately not. Basically it seems this one machine that views the email in the reading pane is the only one that can do it quickly. Have tried on other gx280s and they all have the same issue. It looks like the attachment is being read (possibly by AV) before its displayed even though the attachment isn't being opened.
What the mystery is is why one machine with exactly the same build as the others and the same AV etc can view the email almost immediately. The Outlook view settings etc are identical to any of the other machines. Very strange. Going to try uninstalling the AV software off one of the machines and then see if it takes the same time.

Worked out exactly what it was. The PCs are accessing a group email box and the exchange server is in the states. Because of this Outlook is set to connect in online mode instead of cached mode.
With it being in online mode the av is going all the way to the exchange server to read the email and its attachment to check for viruses.
The one machine that was quick basically didn't have the exchange plugin working properly in his av, when uninstalled and reinstalled it took the same time as everyone elses.
Thanks for the replies - the Exchange plug in now turned off on each machine as its unnecessary when file protection is on and the exchange servers have their own av to stop anything ever getting onto the exchange servers with a virus in the first place.
