Question tiscali phone line, modem finds 'no dial tone' ???

Hi I have a computer I am trying to connect to Tiscali PAYG internet for my sister. When dialling connected to her tiscali phone line the modem finds 'no dial tone' - the phone works fine!
- If I connect it to my dads BT phone line it picks up straight away!
I have spent 'a long time' talking with various BT and tiscali 'experts' and checking and changing parameters on computer (not that I think it is any problem with the computer ) to no avail... The line checks out OK with BT and tiscali have no reason why the line should be unable to connect a computer...
My dads line was the original one and my sisters was added subsequently - completely seperate numbers - can use both lines at the same time etc
So any ideas on why computer can't connect? - Any advice much appreciated

Cheers

Mick

Do you have 1571 answering service? I remember when I had a modem if there was a message waiting the modem wouldn't work because the dial tone is different...

I ended up disabling the wait for dial tone before dial..

Disable Dial Tone Detection
If you cannot determine the cause of the "No Dial Tone" error message, it may be possible to work around the issue by disabling the dial tone detection of your modem. To disable dial tone detection:
1. Click Start, click Control Panel
2. Click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Phone and Modem Options.
3. Click the Modem tab, click your modem on the list of installed modems, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Modem tab, click to clear the Wait for dial tone before dialing check box, and then click OK.

Question

thanks Rob

I tried clearing all the messages from 1571 so there is no break in the dial tone and also clearing the 'wait for dial tone' checkbox - no difference I'm afraid. So still stuck!

Any other ideas anyone?

Cheers

Make sure the modem driver is not a generic one. If it is install the correct driver for it.
Is one of the lines ex directory, you will need to put 1470,, and a space before the number dialled, as this will bypass the BT ex directory coding structure.

Are u using tone or pulse on the tiscali connection?

That might be a by modem setting, I cant remember, so it shouldnt matter.
