Any way to increase the speed of my dial up connection
I cannot get braodband where I live and a radio broadband service is not available. What options do I have to speed up my internet connection? Currently only connecting at 33k!

Depending on your usage - i.e. night and weekends only you can get 256mbit duplex isdn on a normal line. A couple of ISP were providing this last year.

Had heard in the past you can have BT power the line more, I think the term was set it to 3 or something!?

Phoneline is OK. I think your talking about "upping" the Ren on the line. Advice given by someone who I suspect has not had the delight of ever asking BT for anything lol!

The correct term would be: 'increasing the gain' on the line. Its standard practice to lower it, which saves BT a fortune over the whole network. You arrange this by speaking the BTs fault reporting service; Ive spoken to people in (BT) call centres whove told me that Id need to deal with 'sales'; if this happens hang up and dial again, the next fellow was an engineer who did it straight away. Thisll probably only see the speed increase to 44kbps or thereabouts though, 48kbps if youre lucky. Cheap extensions will lower the speed too, to check plug the modem fly lead directly into the master socket and see if theres an improvement.

One last suggestion; when you plug directly into the master socket, remove EVERY other device thats plugged in. My fax machine started to cripple dial up connection speed out of the blue.

Increase the gain (volume) on your line via BT by a click or two, then you should get proper 56K connections. You should get at least 44kbps, ideally 49.2kbps ore more. I always use to connect at 33.6bps, after gain increase it always connected at 49.3bps and sometimes 50.6bps. This should improve your download speed a bit, but not much It increased mine from 3.5-4K to 4.8-5K constant. I would die if I had to go back to dialup now

Requesting to have the gain increased is an extremely straight forward process, as long as you speak to a competent member of staff.
