Default Simple RAM question

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone can tell me if RAM needs to be installed in equal portions. i.e. If i have two RAM slots available and have 128mb in one slot and 64mb in the other, will they both work well or do i need to have them balanced (128 in both)? I was under the impression they needed to be balanced but someone selling RAM told me they didn't need to be balanced but that it was better to have them close in size (i.e. not 128mb in one slot and 32 in the other).

Can anyone clarify?

Thanks

James

On a Pentium class machine only 72 pin SIMMs need to be installed in matched pairs. DIMMs, either 168pin or 184pin can be installed singularly. In some circumstances some combinations might not work together but this is very rare now.

Also something that has not been mentioned, if it is a very new machine, check to see if your system runs RAM in Duel Channel, if so it must be a matched pair also.
