First time play with Linux - which version to get ?
I'd like to have a little play around with Linux and install it onto a virtual PC. Which version should I get that offers something approaching windows, email client, etc...

First CD is base and all you need for a minimal install. Others contain packages you may or may not want. You've installed a load of stuff you don't need with those three CDs but since you're new "we" will let you off the bloatware comments
Ubuntu would be a better bet for you if all you want is a desktop, see how you get on with Mandrake.

I have used SuSe before which I thought was fairly good. That was 9 CD's Have no idea with the command line stuff though, only used the gui side of SuSe. Oh and a copy of Knoppix is very handy to have in case Windows dies and you need to get on the web urgently.

Not impressed with Fedora (tried Core3): apart from the default desktop being Gnome (spit) it trashed my partition table - on a drive it wasn't being installed on! I've heard other people have similar troubles: it seems to be moving into M$ territory and making sure you can't use any other OS after it has been installed.
Mandrake has gone downhill badly since 9.1, but it's still a good newbie distro. I prefer SUSE, but I'm not sure it's for the complete newbie: it's a bit too powerful, and some of the options available during install could get you in trouble. But once set up, it's easy to do whatever you want. It has a funny way with nVidia drivers though.
