Dell poweredge 2850 + powervault 220S / Raid Problems
Hi
we are having all sorts of problems with these boxes and Raid 5.
We have 15 300Gb Scsi disk in the powervault with a DELL perc 4/di / Dell perc 4/dc controller. (AMI Megaraid / LSI one.)
the first problem is we cannot make one single volume of all the disks. OK well we will make 2 with a hot spare. BUT the performance is CRAP. reads are great. 160Meg a sec reads but writes are around 10Meg a sec..
We have tried other disks. 4 9.1 Scsi disk. 80Meg a sec ones. and get similar results.
If we make a Raid 0 reads and writes are great so we recon it must be the controller.
Results are the same under Win 2003 server and Linux
Does anyone have any ideas? cuz were fresh out of them.
Currently using all the latest firmware out there on every thing. As supplied by Dell. But we are getting no were. Dell get similar results so they tell us and are looking into the problem. But we could do with the boxes up and running soon.

I'm on it and there are plenty of mesages about PERC 4 issues - especially with reading/writing speeds. They pass me by as I don't have those sorts of issues but if you search their archives you'll find a whole slew of information.
Enjoy!

Volume Size
I believe that the maximum logical drive size is 2TB, as for write speed, are you using RAID 5, if so ensure write caching is enabled (assuming you have suitable UPS, etc) Is the powervault being run in split backplane or single backplane? (split is preferable). Besides the above, if you post a more detailed config with raid levels, bus, id's etc this may shed some more light on the issue

Thanks for all the comments so far.
If i rember correctly it was running in Cluster mode. but we have also tried single mode. As we have 2 "2850" we want to run in a cluster but have not even attempted this with such slow access to the Raid.
The raid has been built with Raid 0 and raid 5. The raid 0 is fine, speeds are as we would expect its just just the Raid 5 that has the problems. This happens with 3 disks or as may as we can do. 9.1Gb or the 300Gb disks.
Under Windows its Bus 3, Target Id 1, LUN0
Caching has been disabled /enabled it does not seem to make a difference well 0.5 of a meg.
we have already subscribed to that list as well. (thanks)
Thanks for the help so far anything else we should try.?
