Default Formatting ipod question

Got my lad a 4 mb ipod for Chrissie which was fine until battery started playing up so I took it back and exchanged it for a 20 mb version. Trouble is it won't format - it just sticks. This on Windows XP being the same PC that he used successfully for the 4 mb version. I told him to remove any old installations and start afresh but still hangs. Any one any ideas please? Note I have done some searching. Thanks folks. DL

Are you formatting it from Explorer or the command line or are you using an iPod Software Updater? USB2 or FireWire connection?

I had real problems when I connected my 4G Ipod to my PC, running XP SP2, using the firewire connector, just swapped over to USB and it was fine. Didn't really look into it very much as the USB worked fine.

Thanks guys, my lad James is at college at the mo' but AFAIK he used the CD that came with the iPod and connected to back of PC using USB. Am assuming that if the same USB worked for the 4G iPod then this should be OK for the 20G? In other words I don't know if it was a USB2 (how do you tell?). David

If it shows up, it's physically connected correctly. Make sure all other devices are unplugged from the bus (e.g. printers) and the iPod is fully charged. Turn off any anti-virus software. Then use the latest updater from http://www.apple.com/uk/ipod/download/
