There is a TIGER on my desk !!
Ok i realise that i have just alienated most people (well windows users), but for all you mac guys you will know what i mean.
Yeah the beta versions have been fun, but nothing quite like the packaged shrink wrap mcCoy to get you excited.
G5 is all ready for the install, but as luck would have it I dont have the time today to do anything else with it.
If i get a chance i will post with some comments on it's first install later.
Cmon guys tell me when yours arrives !!
Chris

I'm told that the latest ADC mailing, that ships today, will include a copy of Tiger, so, my copy should turn up soon. Unless Apple has the intelligence to post it on the ADC site, which I doubt, as they should have done this last week!
I'll certainly give my views once I've got it installed.
Swiss, have you been over to http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ yet? if not then get over there and grab some of those new Tiger only downloads.

Oi all you Solaris bods that are getting Tiger, wouldn't mind a write up on how you find it for home use and is the Unix aspect a real benefit?
Cheers, been thinking about getting a MAC, but still can't justify the cost of 'em.

Alex,
Not even a mac Mini? OK, so they still aren't cheap as chips, but depending on what you want to do with it, it should hold up pretty well, and the form factor is just tiny.
I'm no unix geek, but I'm learning, and must say that it is very nice to be able to jump into the command line and bash out a few commands now and then, for example, if a network drive won't unmount you'd normally have to logout. Sod that, jump into terminal and just umount -fv /Volumes/NameOfVol job done It's being able to do this kind of thing that is fantastic.
Same goes for changing permissions and ownership on items. Yes you can use the 'get info command' and then select the permissions from the pop-up menus, but by the time it takes to wait for the Finder to bring up the info on a large folder, you'd have been in the terminal and chmod' and chown'd the folder.
For most users, they'll never want, nor need to go near the terminal, but for tech chaps, well, it's hard to keep away :-)

The BSD side of things makes it rock completely for a UNIX type, I wouldn't use anything else now (on the desktop that is), and with Fink installed you get your own Debian style apt-get and all the joyness that brings. I have a full apache/perl/mod_perl/mysql dev environment on my PowerBook, all works excellently.

Just in, will install in a minute. No queue or anything at Regent Street, but I went there about 7.30 after a few beers. The airport extreme was winking at me when I walked past it, so gotta plug that in too. The pain!

at home now... gonna install it on my G4 and PB 15"
Slightly drunk from pub, so this should be a challenge. dont know if the apple manual recommends slightly blurred vision and hiccups when installing tiger, but what the hell
Angry, let me know how you fare..
Bet your guys in IT will be around your desk come tuesday having a sneaky look (just so they can see what Longhorn might look like next year )

Its gone so well I decided to do the PB install too so I could get it out of the way. Spotlight is much more responsive than I was expecting and manages to sift through the almost million files on my machine in an absolute instant, its unbelievable . Generally its much faster too, Motion perfoms better, Safari is quicker, Quicktime 7 is nice too. I guess I'll just keep finding nice new things as the days go by.
Oh and the ripple effect... well...
