Let's start with the basics.... Have you got a crossover cable? Or 2 straight through patch cables and a hub? If not, it's not going to work with what you've got.
If you have, just plug them together, go to network settings (right click on "my network places", and select properties), bring up the properties for the local area network, and set the computers with different IP adresses (eg 192.168.0.1 and .2).
Should be then be able to browse the network.

get to the IP settings - you'll have to click on "TCP/IP" to get into the last page......
