Lightbulb Upgraded from Win ME to Win2K pro...2 problems though!!

**********NOW RESOLVED**********

Hi
1.I can only get resolution 640X480 not the normal 1024X768?
2.The right hand numerical part of my keyboard doesnt work?

Okay, here's what i did.I have a genuine restore version of WIN ME,installed it on a clean install, then upgraded to win 2k using an upgrade disc.I did it this way cos the original win ME has lots of extra's whereas the win2k has only the bare system. This way i get the best of both worlds.

....except for the above issues, both were fine on the ME version.

Where should i look,any advice?

Cheers
Paul.

When i look in device manager it says video controller (VGA compatible) drivers (code28) not installed.
I've searched the original WIN ME restore disc, nothing?

Where do i find it?

Paul,
What graphics card does your machine have? If you right click on the desktop and select 'properties' then click the 'settings' tab. under the montior graphic there should be a 'display' item, which should tell you what monitor you're using and the display card in the machine. For example mine says "Plug and Play Monitor on NVIDIA GeForce2 Integrated GPU"

This tells me it's an NVIDIA card, so I would pop over to NVIDIA.com and search their driver database for a W2K compatible driver.

My guess is that when you updated from ME to W2K it 'lost' the driver you had for ME and it's using the built in driver from W2K, which does not support your monitors complete resolutions.

It says....

Display
(Default monitor) on VGA

then underneath the only option i have is 16 colours.

(I'm downloading all the windows updates at the moments as well.)

If win2k doesn't recognise the graphics hardware, it will just use it's own default vga driver (16 colours at 640x480 I think), and so looking at the display properties won't help (it'll likely just display the default driver text). The only way I've ever found of reliably determining what graphics chip you've got is by opening up the case and having a look...

p.s. Have you dual booted the system, keeping the old WinME install available. If so, you could look at the display properties in there. Win2k did not come with many drivers ootb...

No i havent dual booted,i installed win ME from a restore disc then upgraded to ME.
You are right about a lack of drivers though,i thought upgrading from the original factory ME disc would get round that,ie keep the original drivers.

So you'll need to work out the make and model of your video card. Either take the lid off or look through any documentation you had with the PC.

Alternatively, try some of the tools available on the 'Net. For instance, ATI provide a small utility you can download which will tell you details of their video cards (if it's one in your PC):

Sorry mate. No winme drivers will work in win2k. It's a completely different operating system, and as such requires completely different drivers. WinMe was based on the old 16bit Win95 / MSDOS, and Win2k was based on Windows NT.

Completely different animals...

Out of interest, why did you choose win2k and not xp?

Ian,i only have 256 RAM and its more suited to win2K (so i've been told).
Also pc at work and my laptop are all win2k so i'm familiar with it.

I'm checking the compaq presario driver download section for the 5004uk model, hopefully that should help.Nice to see they still support 4 year old models still.

cheers chris, will use it if need be.

Glad to hear you got it sorted.

Btw, I'm sure xp home would run fine though. I've run it on machines here in the office with only 128Mb of ram (the home edition, not pro), and it ran just fine. In fact, I ran it on my old laptop (a P3 Toshiba with 192Mb ram), and that ran perfectly ok as well. Was doing java c++ and development on it for over a year before I got a quicker one...
