pointer, cursor (arrow thing) not sure what it's called TBH

anyway, every day for no reason when i'm moving the mouse the pointer gets a life of it's own and flies around the screen and clicks on everything, bringing up menus etc. goes on for about 10 secs then stops

i'm assuming it's some sort of virus but AVG hasn't picked anything up.

any ideas as it's driving me nuts

Press start press connect to press show all connections
Anything different there? Does this only happen when you are connected to the Internet? Do you have dial up or broadband? If dial up have you found the computer reconnected to the Internet when you are sure you disconnected it?
Do you have a firewall? Is AVG upto date?

Faulty Mouse!

Change the mouse and everything should be ok

Sometime if it's a loose connection in the pack of the PC (Assuming PS2 mouse) then that happens.

Failing that, your rodent has died

where is 'connect to' ? i press start and i've got programs,documents, settings, search etc

only really use the comp for internet so not sure if this happens offline.

yep, just found it's a ps/2 mouse, hopefully the old fella has just snuffed it and there's nothing more sinister than that
