Basically my desktop will be wired in,its just i want my laptop wireless.

Make sure you get a modem router. I originally didn't and my existing modem was incompatable, so i had to get the router changed. A lot of unnecessary messing about

I found the Belkin kit to be a bit on the flakey side.

Linksys do a w/less g router with 4 wired ports as do lots of others.
Generally Dlink, Netgear etc. all good very similar features - NAT, SPI firewall, routing etc. Start with no security if you're a novice. (Otherwise lots of default reset button pressing needed)

Hi PaulR,

I would advise you to go for something like this

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=52754

Extremely easy to use and setup. All you need

I've been through quite a few makes of routers / modems / switches, and US Robotics always seems to work the best.

I too have NTL cable and a similar network setup up.

I use a Linksys WRT54G wireless broadband router. Plug the WAN interface int the NTL modem and then you have the wireless network combined with a 4 port switch for your LAN.

Only problem i had was that initially my wireless network would not stay connected (i tried different makes and types of wireless network card including matched linksys stuff to no avail!), went to the US Linksys site which had a more recent firmware patch than the uk site. put the new firmware on the router (nice and easy program does it for you) and not one problem since.

My WRT54g did the same thing so I took it back. I believe the US use a different range of frequencies

If you want wireless, you will need the DG834G, that G on the end denotes 802.11g capability..

The Netgear is very easy to setup and use.

I have installed several for myself and friends and all function perfectly. The range is good too, if you place them at a decent height downstairs, or in an upstairs room ideally.

the US firmware looks to be using a different default frequency, but it's working and has been for months

a friend had exactly the same problem with the same fix and he has had no further problems either

I have a Netgear also, started off with Linksys but it kept dropping the connection every 5 minutes even after a firmware update. Took it back, changed to netgear and worked brilliantly since.

I must say though, now and again i come across sites that knock the connection out, and i have to pull the power and plug it back it to reset it. Its only happened on 3 or 4 sites so far. But does happen everytime i vist them so have to avoid them now
