i think a brand new battery will only last about 1.5 hours. older laptop hasnt got the high technology of power managements.
you can goto www.ibm.com and they have a good source of info on your laptop.

yeah, new laptops are more powerful and less hungry on the battery, hence longer battery time. everything from hdd to TFT screen has better power management to conserve battery.
as for your thinkpad 600, maybe get a spare battery? have a look at www.mdsbattery.co.uk. it will set you back about £100.

Definitely, out the laptops that I have had over the years my current one is the most powerful and the battery lasts nearly four hours.

Hi, I had one as a work laptop last year (being the student I wasn't allowed a new T41)
I did attempt to watch films on it on the train, it never lasted more than an hour normally, but the battery was pretty buggered at this point.....
If you could rip the dvd to the hard drive I think you would have a much better chance, as the power to spin the dvd drive I suspect will be quite high.
Overall thou, a very sturdy laptop, much better build quality than my newer Dell one.
