Default BT Speed Upgrade CAP Downgrade : Move to what ISP ?

Looks like they will want £2 For every GB over your 15GB allowance @£26.99 the only way to get 30GB it to go via BTyahoo @£29.99

I know this has been done to death but as the speeds increase the prices are changing fast at the moment .I'm going to move my connection to an uncapped ISP I don't mind paying £30 but that's my topps.

I've seen UKonline are doing no cap 2Mb for £29.99

anything better out there

Craig.

I'm with plus net and they're changing their 21.99 a month Premier account form unlimited to a Fair Useage system

The way it works is you get the fastest speed available on your line/exchange - this can be anything from 512k up to 8mb - yes 8mb!!

The Fair Use things works by allowing you so much data transfer.

At 21.99 a month I get 30gb of data. If I go over that in a month, I get to level 1 of fair use. If I'm under 30gb the next month, I go back to level 0.

If I'm above my transfer allowance 3 times then my internet is reduced to 128k connection until the end of the month.

Sounds compliacted but is okay if you're downloading less than 30gb (or 50gb for 29.99 a month)

I'm curious, being plugged in non stop with website development, bbs use etc and using streaming videos I have trouble hitting 5 gigs a month on a 1meg line, what do you have to do to be eating up over 30 gigs?

On the PlusNet forums I've seen people who are well over 100 gigs a month who are grumbling about the fair usage thing. I think that PlusNet have got it right, heavy users free to download mega amounts off peak so regular users get the best performance.

The cap wouldn't cause me any real problem as I'm under 30GB a month anyway. You have to remember that the allowance is upload and Download combined.

video/Email is getting bigger all the time but the ISP's are reducing Caps so increasing prices all the time. BT will be charging £1.95 for every GB over your limit.

Hello

You have to have an insatiable appetite for movies, games and music and download from p2p / Bit Torrent more or less 24/7.

Is it a fair assumption then that the heavy users are downloading pirated music/video/software then?

The Cap does NOT include uploading as far as I'm aware. It's also uncapped/unlimited downloading betwwen 1am and 8am with Plusnet.

I do think people who are downloading over 100gb a month are either...

1. running a large number of computers (10+) and all downloading lots
2. Downloading lots of movies and 1000's of mp3

I have 2 computers here in regular use plus the occasion use of 4 others and still have never exceded 3gb a month

I'm the same jowl, about 3 gigs a month and using the web a lot. PlusNet have made it cheaper for me and I'll hopefully get an 8 meg line being yards from the exchange. But if I was stealing gazzillions of movies and mp3's it may affect me.

Well,

I've done about 5gb so far this month on one PC (have 2) I don't record the data on me laptop..

My pc and laptop are switched on as soon as I get in and are on till i got to sleep...

I use it for Xbox live and always use a webcam to chat ( hate typing !! )

The PC's are on MORE on the weekends.........

I don't download anything untoward...........

So I could be VERY close to this limit........

I better watch out

Sorry, I was talking about Plusnet.

Their 'Fair Use' is 30gb Download only. Upload after between 1am and 8am doesn't count.

Also a good point about XBox/PS2/Webcam useage - these would really hammer the download allowance. It's not something I use a lot but If I did then I'd consider changeing ISP

If so I am moving providers! Is there any setup costs? I am with Pipex and think they have been great but at 23.99 or what ever it is for a 512 link its worth the extra few quid for 2mb, especially if I decide to expense my internet line which apparently I can do (within reason)

One other question though, do they block any ports?
No problem with UKOnline as far as I know. I used to use them when I had to pay £15 a month AND call charges on dial-up

I would say that a lot of providers will, IMHO go down the 'capping' route as it's data transfer that costs most.

Your best bet is to peruse http://www.adslguide.org

They've been going for years. Though I think they were a bit slow on the broadband uptake.

There parent company might be on - it's easyweb or easy something.

I never had any troubles when i was on dial-up with them...though that's a bit different I know. In fact, I still use the ukonline e-mail address....but not for a lot now!

so no problems with P2P with those ports blocked.

I checked with www.ukonline.co.uk and it does look like it's 29.99 for 2Mb with no other costs if your migrating to them.
