Default Help Please. Windows 2000 Problem

My son's PC has today failed to fire up. It worked perfectly yesterday
We are getting the following message: "Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. WINNT\SYSTEM 32|CONFIG\SYSTEMced.

Any help welcomed.

Hmmm, that is interesting as my laptop running XP has just done the same thing. ave it to IT expert and he has saved all the files onto a portable harddrive but could not repair the existing operating system. Needs a clean install.

In your case, enter the bios and set the computer to boot from the CD and put the windows 2000 disc in and attempt a repair. Otherwise its re-install time. Wait and see what some other people say first though as I am not a full on IT guy.

Unless I'm mistaken, that file is part of the registry. I'm going to assume that you are NOT overclocking, because us overclockers see that a lot. Most common cause is a sudden crash while Windows is accessing the HDD, which damages that file. If you are overclocking, then turn it down a bit and the problem might go away. But probably won't. If you aren't overclocking, then try boosting the CPU voltage a notch. It might work, and it certainly won't hurt. But odds are Windows is borked. You can try using the console to go back to an old version of the reg, but that's about it apart from a reformat.
