Home video editing wrt sound levels
A friend has been doing some home video editing with a suite that came with his Sony digital video camera. He is quite happy with putting it all together except for the microphone recorded voice overs.
The noise level of the camera is high and also CD tracks levels are equivalent to the camera sound level. The recordings he made with a cheap (£10 from PC world) microphone will not pull up to the same level as the other sounds.
Is the microphone likely to be a problem or does he just need to bring down the other sound levels?
Any advice appreciated...
Cheers
Mick

I presume a computer is being used to edit this stuff?
Can you not change the volume levels?
Even the basic volume control panel in Windows allows you to modify the input level of the microphone. It also sounds as though they should also reduce the volume of the recorded video as this will help alleviate the problem (should be able to do this in the video editing package).

Yes the recording input is at 100% and play vol at 100% but sound is low compared with other sounds. If you turn up speakers to be able to hear microphone recordings OK the other sounds are deafening. I suggested to him that a better mike would bring the recorded base levels up higher and be clearer, or he needs to find out how to lower the volume of the other sounds in the sequence. No had much experience of this stuff myself though...

Well, a better mike might help, but I suspect you'll just end up distorting the sound if you try and increase the levels further. I would definitely be trying to lower the volume of the video rather than increasing the volume of the mike..
