Best thing is to start the machine in safe mode and see what comes up - then after you can get to safe mode, run elements such as Ad-Aware and a virus checker to see what's on the system. You may also want to see if you can borrow a copy of Norton Systemworks and boot the PC from the CD, and let it run its magic, cleaning up the registry etc. I'm sure this would resolve the issue....
Good luck

Sounds like the blaster worm virus.
You can download utilities to clean it if your AV software isn't picking it up (there's one called stinger I think).
Reply if you're desperate and I'll give you the details of how to clean it manually!!

My brothers laptop did exactly the same, and as doobiedooo says, it was the Blaster (and 2 other, but cant remember the names) virus. The way I overcame it (cos it wouldnt give me enough time to get online and download the fixes) was to get on another PC (my laptop) and save the removal tools to a USB key. Then as Mightyyid says, start in safe mode, and then plug in the USB key with fixes, but, you will need to go into Services and manually start the USB service (safe mode closes all services/ports).
Run the removal tool, and hey-presto!
Then get yourself a good firewall, such as Zone Labs or Norton.
