Default ADSL Throughput intermittent, any ideas ?

Hi all,

I have a Pipex 512 ADSL connection through a wireless router. For the last week or so, it's like the throughput is just coming and going. You can be browsing quite happily, and then it all just pauses for 'say' 10secs ! HOW annoying ! Then you're ok for a minute, then another pause !

Same with (legal) downloads. I went to download Adaware last night, it sped through at 50ks and then stopped at 1.9mb, wouldn't resume either.

Any ideas what can cause this ? Do I phone Pipex ? Or BT ? Or just continue swearing at it !?!

Thanks

Matt

try plugging in directly to see if it's a fault with your router.

have you got a secure wireless set up ???

How many people around you have DSL aswell? Could be that the contention ratio at the exchange is getting pushed which means there are a lot of people fighting for the bandwidth. Also with the schools on holiday, it means that there will be a lot more people on line at times when you would normally expect it to be quiet.

Cheers all, I'll try going direct through the router. I live in a small countryside close, and I doubt any of my neighbours even know what a wireless network is, let alone how to leech off me ! But I'll look into this too.

Could be contention ratio Chris, I'm gonna keep an eye on it mate - might wing pipex an email just to see what they say.

Thanks again

What make / Model of router have you got.

I had a similar problem with a couple of Netgear Routers when i upgraded the firmware. Back to original firmware and everything ok.

Er, wasn't going to mention what router because everyone will immediately say 'a-ha, there's your problem'. And I wanted other suggestions first

I, er, erm have the the Linkysys WAG54G. It has been absolutely fine, and for a couple of months or so. Yes the connection between PC and Router drops out periodically, but the data throughput on the ADSL connection has been fine, the problems have only been recent and I haven't changed the firmware.

Bl**dy Linksys !!!
