Excel - Autofill - Too Clever

When copying a number down, one can drag down using the bottom right corner of the cell. [cursor changes to a large +]
Excel is good, as it can work out the increment if multi cells are selected, and use the same increment basis.
However when copying a single cell, excel ASSUMES [incorrectly] that I want to increment by 1, when mostly I don't.
Where do these options live, as I beleive you can set basic rules.
ie - single cell - no increment
multi cells - use same increment
