Default Need for Speed!

can you assist with my 2 week old laptop?

Its a Intel Pentium 4 3Gh Packard Bell with 512 RAM and 40 GB HD.

Over the last couple of days it has began to run at a snail's pace, locking up frequently.

A System Information check shows that I have -:

Total Physical Memory - 512.00MB
Available Physical Memory - 141.31MB

Is there any way I can free up the Available Memory to speed things up?

BTW, I have minimal programs running at startup so this isn't the issue.

Thanks.

Have you run:

a) A good on-line virus checker? (Don't rely on any already loaded)

b) Ad-Aware?

c) Spybot?

d) HijackThis?

You seem to be chewing up a lot of RAM there.

I have 345MB free out of 512MB, and I'm running BOINC/SETI in the background. As I said, you really should have more free RAM than that and the most likely culprit is malware. McAfee or no, I'd do some checks with those programs. Even if the answer is nothing, you've eliminated one possibility.

Also, are you with Wannadoo? I've seen this issue with them as an ISP before.
