Default Speeding up a Windows 2000 Server

Here's one for the W2K Server peeps.

I've got three windows servers, two of them I'm am happy with, mainly as they don't do that much, one is FTP server, other is backup server.

The third however is our mailserver/file server. It's running Services for Macintosh, as it needs to, plus it's running NetNow 6 as the email server.

The thing is rather slow when trying to do anything, for example, click Start -> Settings -> Control panels is ok, but getting the list of CP's takes around 30 seconds.

Trying to launch any other application takes anywhere between 60 - 120 seconds, and then using the apps is awful (I'm talking control panels and windows explorer, rather than Word or something like that)

Now, it's only got 512MB RAM in it, and I'd put 256 in it yesterday and it's a little bit faster, but still slow.

What sort of things can I look at to speed it up? I know I don't access it a lot, and for email, it's quick enough sending things out, but when I come to apply windows updates I'm sitting there waiting for the thing to bloody launch IE. I know I'm very impatient, but hey, I'm a geek, what do you expect

Seriously though, would changing VM settings make any difference?

Any advice appreciated

go into task manager, click performance whats the avg CPU utilisation?

If above 30% click on processes and click the cpu column, and see what process is doing it..

Theres 1000's of reasons why it may be slow.. poor config is normally top of the lists..

Re-install with FreeBSD?

Seriously, what CPU are you running? How many clients? If it's a PII 300 with 10000 mail users each set to check their mail every 2 mins, it'll be a different answer to a quad P4 Itanium serving you and your mate once a week
