DVD Media
A bit of help required.
I have just got a DVD burner (NEC 3500a) and wondered what is the best way to burn ie; DVD +, DVD -, etc. And what are the differences.
Cheers

Some informative reading there Nimbus.
I would strongly disagree with a lot of the ratings of various dyes though.
I won't go into specifics (i'd be here all day), but the info is far from accurate.

SDB,
As I used DVD-Rs to burn and store my home video, I'd be interested to hear your views. I've tried a brand of rITEK04 and one of the first disks I did is becoming un-playerble after less than a year. I'm looking for long term stability. Any advice?
Thanks

I have an NEC 3500a, I use Datawrite grey's. Bought from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk For DL work I have some Infiniti which seem ok.
I had an NEC 2500a beforehand and used the grey's, not one coaster.

RitekG04 dominated the UK market for most of 2003/2004.
I have some of the first G04 that arrived in the UK and it still plays back flawlessly.
The RitekG05 was expected to be the 8x daddy but it's not played out like that.
I'd be interested to hear what brand of Ritek it is you're now having probs with as longevity is not something we can test personally.
Someone mentioned the Datawrite 8x greys. These have been hugely popular, manufactured with the FUJIFILM03 digital-organic dye.
Fuji claim up to 50yrs before noticeable playback degradation.
8x yellows are the latest offering from Datawrite, manufactured with the CMC magnetics dye.
In my opinion, CMC MAG and TTG02 (TDK) are two of the best dyes on the planet at the moment.
While the Fuji discs will only burn at 8x, the CMC & TTG02 will burn at 12x in capable writers (Pioneer 108/NEC3500 etc)
There are cheaper discs out there, some cheaper than CD-R, but it's a bit of a false economy if you're spitting out coasters and re-backing-up your discs.
Sith
For dual layer media, here's the DVD+DL i've tested:
Infiniti - Poor (repeated failure on 2nd layer burn)
Ridisc - Good
Datasafe - Poor (both layers burn sucessfully but some will not play back 2nd layer)
Traxdata - Good
Verbatim - Good

I bought some Arita RITEK04s. Since I had problems with these I've just switched to Taiyo Yuden (TYG01). I've heard some good things about this brand. I've never had any problems with burning with either, and I'm not to bothered about fast burn speeds. I've only got an 4x burner so not sure if 8x media will work at 4x or 2x in my burner anyway.
Interesting about the Fuji 50 year claim. I'll have to try some of their disks.
Cheers

There's your problem with Ritek G04
Arita is officially Riteks own B,C&D grade distribution channel.
Arita branded discs are always cheap but this tends to be reflected in the quality of the discs.
Any on-line retailer will sell these without warranty as Ritek do not offer any warranty on the discs once they've left the factory.
TY discs are indeed outstanding quality, but you're not half paying for it (circa 70p per disc at todays prices).
There is a lot of fake TY media about...beware. If it seems too cheap, it's not genuine.

Now you mention it, when I brought Arita they were branded as Grade A, but I'm sure that when I was looking for more, they were graded B. That may well be the problem then. They weren't that cheep when I brought them. Certainly not a lot of difference that other G04's on sale.
As for TY, I don't mind paying for the quality. I'm not looking for the cheepest, just the best. The place I got my current batch from garuntees genuine TY stock, so hopfully they should be fine.
Cheers
