Unhappy Help needed urgently !!! re McAfee not responding

Have a virus on my pc, and it is doing all sorts of tricks (believe virus is located at system32.dll ??).The virus already seems to done away with Norton, as it would not even start up so I have bought McAfee Internet Security Suite 2005 today to cure (so I thought!)....... But, I put the disc in, get the installation screen up , and the install wizard doesn't appear once I click to install (or it does, I see a quick flash of what I think is the wizard!!!).

Anyone got any ideas ?

I have also tried adding software through control panel.

Waiting in anticipation

Nate.

Run it in safe mode, or run the online Panda active scan: http://www.pandasoftware.co.uk/

What operating system do you have? Do you know how to start the computer in safe mode?

Sorry late to reply.

Press the f8 key down just after start up. You may not even need to use a virus detector. Can you do this?

After clicking the link, try refreshing the page a couple of times - it should work then.

For safe mode, press F8 after the bootup beep & before XP starts loading, ideally when the black & white bar goes along the bottom of the screen. Of I think you can press the shift key as it boots.

Okay,

Pandascan still won't work.

Spent 2-3 hours last night (!!!) trying to get McAfee to install through safe mode. Now there are script errors appearing as it installs, have tried 3 times now, and it gets to (roughly) 99% complete, and won't go any further (actually left it on overnight at the 99%, and it was the same this morning).

I can honestly say that my pc is 'that close' to going through my window !!!

Any other suggestions chaps/chapettes ???

Thanks so far

Nate.

Norton reported it was a worm, living in system32.dll .

Things that are not currently working on the pc

* Blueyonder Webmail
* Search facility (via start button)
* install wizard
* sometimes I cannot even gain internet access
* and for about the 5th time now, Microsoft security updates have been updated(the same ones!!)

Apart from the above, I am still finding things that are not working correctly.

You say it's 'done away' with norton. If norton is still available do another scan and see if you can find out the exact name of the virus. Big help.

I had the unzipped Norton still on my machine, so ran the pre-install scanner .....

422 infections
378 repaired
23 deleted
21 left

The main virus that keeps coming up is w32.pinfi

Any ideas?

Search facility is back (for now), Windows updates have been updated twice already (obviously something is wrong here!!). But McAfee still will not install (I have uninstalled Norton). Oh yes, Norton would not run.

anyone?

Okay, done the McAfee online scan, results ......

C:/documents and settings\..\adnet[1].htm - JS/Noclose.gen
C:/WINDOWS\system32\c.bat - w32/sdbot.worm.bat.b
C:/WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe - w32/sdbot.worm.gen

Going to try and install McAfee again.

Any other advice to clean the viruses ? Have been told there is not much I can do with the worm in the system folder ....... But then what do I know !!

thanks again

Your system's a mess! Try installing again, if you're still having no luck, boot to safe mode as described above then delete these two files...

C:/WINDOWS\system32\c.bat
C:/WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe

Then try again.
