PS2 game recommendations please.
Hi all, today I became the owner of a Sony PS2, at the ripe old age of 34 !!!
( My b'day today ).
I already have GT3 and an 8mb card and went out today and bought 2 games that are going back tomorrow as they are ****e!!
Ghosthunter and R/Evil Survivor 2.
Can anyone offer some decent ideas to a PS2 newbie?
Not into shoot em up games but dont want tooooo many driving games either.
Thanx
Skoosh.

grand theft auto
what id recommend is getting the official ps2 magazine, as this has demos that u can try out. its like £5.99 and usually has about 5-10 playable demos on it, but a bunch of other crap.

Save some money - play grand theft auto3 and then when you are done, play grand theft auto 3 vice city and when you are done there grand theft auto san andreas should be about a fiver
Alternatively, try Burnout 3

Aggree with SJ Skyline, also 34 and love the GTA titles, they are pretty immersive for this very early stage in game evolution.
Skip forward 20 years and you cant imagine what will be about, skip back and apart from nostalgia and a few gems generally rubbish, things have improved !

6) Medal of Honour Rising Sun
7) Jak and Daxter 1 and 2

Don't bother with Jak 2 - it's total pants - the Ratchett & Clank series are miles better, no. 3 just out.
I was seriously disappointed by The Getaway, it was appalling, it only sold in buckets due to the amount of foul language in it - the sequel only gets 3 out of 10 in Edge...
WRC3 is great (getting 4 for chrimbo)
TimeSplitters 2 - BRILLIANT First Person Shooter
Metal Gear Solid 2 is fantastic if you like games to look like films
Tomb Raider AOD isn't bad but nowhere near the quality of the series that were on PS1.
WipeEout Fusion is good twist on racing but it's got a lot of bugs in it unfortunately.
EyeToy is quite good if you wanna lose some weight and don't mind looking mike a dipstick

game play? I was really looking forward to the The Getaway for ages, and bought it release day (Had the version before it was withdrawn) and I just didn't like from level 1. The controls were awkward (and I thought Tomb Raider's were bad!).
Bottom line is - it was overhyped. I so wanted it to be good but it was no-where near the game it should have been.
and as for Black Monday - even the TV ad looks ****.
I always make my own mind up games, regardless of what magazines say - but I regard Edge as one of, if the best gaming mag available - covers all platforms unlike some others which quite often slag off other consoles. I don't always agree with it but it does tend to hit the mark more often than not.

Messiah me old mucka, could I ask how old you are? I ask on a serious note and wont take the p**s. It's just that IMO The Getaway was not aimed at the younger generation who wouldnt have a clue who The Kray Brothers were and as the game makes a few references to that era this may be the cause of the younger gamers dissapointment of the game

I think we'll just have to disagree on that one...
Do you fancy having an argument on Jak 2 now? It's cr@p as well (also sold that one on ebay! - nothing like the first one!)

Overly long/boring and often repetitive driving missions
Yes the story line was very good, and had they made the Getaway into a Guy Ritchie type film it would have done very well, however as a game it just didn't work for me, especially when you have something like like the GTA series to play on.

I would agree with you that Jak 1 was better than 2. Havent played R&C so cant compare.
Happy gaming my freind.
Oh yes, are you playing GTA-SA? If so post your percentage on the leaderboard in the other thread, I dont recall seeing your name on it matey

I can totally recommend R&C mate - it uses the same game engine as Jak, but is far more polished (J&D was no slouch in the graphics dept though). Got fed up of Jak 2 - too much travelling around in between missions. Getting R&C3 from the missus for xmas, can't wait - it's been given a deathmatch mode which looks inspired for that type of game.
Not a big fan of the GTA series either I'm afraid - played the first PS2 version and thought it was a bit repetetive (go there, smash his face in, come back).
Just wait until the GT4 Leaderboard starts!

(i worked on the timesplitters games from the word go..
- and a long time friend of mine worked on getaway and black monday.
wait for TS3 is my advice!!!
Out very very soon after xmas! (going to be worth the wait!)
imo, both the medal of honour games on PS2 are ****e.
both as a gamer and professionally.
burnout3- omg I am not worthy
um- kingdom hearts looks FAB (but long and its an RPG)
metal gear solid two is worth a look too and cheap @ £20 new.

messiah- fat chance
the monkeys came about from general chit chat about non lethal NPC's.. then we decided to make em playable!
nightmare to bug test though due to reduced height and accelerated movement speed.
killzone- looks great (when its static) -horrible framrate issues.. and controls designed by the YTS kid I think. we pi55ed ourselves in the office when looking at it and seeing just how far short of the hype it had fallen..

Think I'll rent Killzone out before splashing out my hard-earned.
I got the first TimeSplitters when I bought my PS2 - until then I'd avoided the analogue sticks like the plague, but it seems so natural now that I find it by far the easiest way of playing an FPS.
Had a mate who brought round a copy of "Red Faction" - I'd never played it before but had the same control system as TS so I wiped the floor with him
Is it Free Radical you work for then? Any play-testing jobs going?

Actually I've always fancied doing games dev stuff, mainly stuff like level design (I do architecture for a living) and always liked messing around with the Tomb Raider level editor - I kinda like all the fantasy visual type stuff and creating my own worlds (well I did until my HDD went pear shaped and lost the lot!!)
Did my HNC in Computer Studies a few years ago and I know that C++ programming is definately NOT my thing - I'd love to be able to program but that level of maths is totally beyond me - anyway as games design these days appears to have so many specialised areas I've thought a couple of times about doing a uni course in games development but it's just taking the plunge isn't it?
...think I might look into it again...any tips?

re ICO,
to those who have played it and like it,
i,d go so far as to say its the best game i have played on the PS2
there arn,t many games that grip you and make you feel part of the story,
the scenery was breathtaking, and the ending was a double edged sword.
yes you had finished the game, but a vast chunk of you had been removed!!
they didnt call it the emotion engine for nothing!!!
Mart
(how many of you still have your copy??)
