Default ADSL question

If you have ADSL installed, does someone actually have to come out to your property to install it, or is it done remotely and the modem etc. sent to you in the post?

Thanks

Usually the latter. It's usually self-install. BT will come out one they have "Activated" you and things still aren't working, i.e. to trace faults. Generally, the plan is to turn you on at the exchange and let you plug your own modem, filters, router etc into the line.

OK?

Self install is dead easy mate. Just plug the provided splitters into your phone sockets, then the phone line goes into the one marked phone and the modem one into the one marked data! That's really all there is too it. :-)

To say it'll improve your internet experience is an understatement!!! :-)

Best.

Two things:

1) It's worth getting a proper modem/router even if you only have one computer. The ISP-supplied USB modems are rubbish, and the router is more secure as well as better performance.

2) Get a software firewall. You can get good ones like ZoneAlarm free, and you really need something.

Agree, especially on a firewall, but be warned...after a long time using and recommending ZoneAlarm, I've had a few issues on WinXP after I went to SP2 (PC hanging at boot up). The Zonealarm forum (www.zonelabs.com) shows I am not alone. My XP box therefore runs sygate (also free). Whatever you do, try the free ones before you spend money on a firewall.
