Default Hard Drive question

I need more space on my hard drive. Been looking at a few to upgrade with.

I'm looking to build a new machine (with a little help) in the New Year, and the upgraded drive will be going in the new machine. I've got IDE at the minute, but I've seen SATA drives. What's the difference??

Which should I go for, IDE or SATA?? My mobo is quite old, a K7S5A, and I don't think it'll take a SATA drive easily, so should I just hang fire with what I've got until I do the new machine if SATA is the way to go, or get a big IDE drive??

Thanks,

Andy.

Your board won't take SATA, period. (Your board is the worst motherboard in existance, if that helps your decision to upgrade...)

SATA is faster than IDE and the lead is smaller to it obstructs airflow less. Within a year or two I'd expect only SATA drives to be available. Wait, then get SATA when you upgrade.

you will only be able to use SATA if you upgrade your mobo though. SATA makes IDE look like dial up

Thanks for the info.

This bit made me chuckle:

Looks like I'll just hang fire until funds allow the upgrade.

Thanks,

Andy

Thumbs up

Walwal - M. doesn't like our boards - But I have taken his advice on upgrading too... - (to a board with SATA function as well )

There is a very helpful forum for the K7S5A http://pub140.ezboard.com/bk7s5amotherboardforum - BIOS upgrades etc - worth a look...

Cheers

Mick

M has been given far too many to fix! I had one myself once to review - it kept "losing" drives, then finally refused to POST. It's reached the point that as soon as someone tells me they are having problems with a computer I ask them if it has an ECS motherboard. And guess what it is about 50% of the time? There's a reason why iECS make the cheapest motherboards in existance...

There is also some useful support here.
