I work as a professional Internet Search Consultant and will gladly give a few pointers. Answers will however, depend on a/ your intended audience (i.e country/region etc.), b/ your budget and c/ Your website and the way it's configured.

Generally speaking, a lot of fuss is made over Goodle Adwords and whilst their ads work, you have to bare in mind Overture reaches far more people overall as it feeds the likes of Wanadoo, MSN and Yahoo! ESpotting can be ok for certain industries but I'm not a huge fan personally. Also worth considering is Mirago (U.K audience) - generally cheaper and with feeds to lots of little search engines. Worst industries to compete in are finance and travel. Other industries can see a PPC bid as low as 10p per click.

Feel free to pm me and I'll be glad to help.
