Laptop boots up to XP logo page then hangs. No problems before this morning safe mode makes no difference etc...

Any suggestions

 

Hit F8 on bootup n try last known good configuration.

Tried that after safe mode, made no difference, also created an emergency boot floppy but that hasn't worked either

 

Have you changed or added any hardware or software? Have you tried leaving it for a REALLY long time - like an hour or two? That is the point where Windows is loading all the drivers, and if there is some sort of inconsistancy (for instance 'cos you changed adriver or some hardware) it will hang. Often it will sort itself out, but it can take some time.

No changes made to the lappy at all. The longest i've left it has been about 360mins, i'll boot it up again and see what happens....

Belongs to my niece, she only uses it for her Uni work, its about a year old and has given no problems before today. the laptop has never been connected to the net, bno additional software installed or updates attempted

 

I hope you neice backs up here work, because my feeling is that Windows is borked and needs re-installing? If you still have the XP disk then you could try a recover - if it works then the files should stay intact.
