From MS Help:

Reregister .dll files
Some of the core Internet Explorer .dll files may not be correctly registered. To register key .dll files for Internet Explorer:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type:
"Primary Hard Drive Letter:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" /rereg

Click OK.

Give it a whirl.

Failing that you can remove Service Pack 2 from your PC. Click start, then select the Control Panel. Go to Add & Remove Programs and scroll down the list. Windows XP Service Pack 2 will be near the bottom. Click Remove to get rid, and then try to install it again.

Oh dear, another one! I've had this problem with Win2k SP4 and WinXP SP2 on different machines (XP on a laptop). On the XP laptop I tried the recovery console, and a low level third party emergency recovery console, but nothing helped. A complete re-install was necessary.

On the Win2k machine I copied essential files from a working SP2 machine and eventually got it to boot, although it is now stuck in limbo, somewhere between SP2 and SP4.

I've given up on the major windows updates now, they only seem to make the computer less reliable.

I agree Jiggerypokery, I had to uninstall Service Pk 2. Also I dont download any of the updates now, they only cause problems, (running WinsXP prof.) Does anyone know how to remove the pop up "updates are ready for your computer, click here to install"? I would love to disable it. Thanks in advance for any advice.

It does seem to cause a lod of problems, fwiw I put off loading it on my machines until I had a clear day to sort out any problems, both desktops and my laptop were done, only issue was it kept "failing" on my big desktop, then realised I had Spybot-SD resident, disabled and then no problem. Everything works fine with the exception of AutoCad which works 2D but is reluctant in 3D.
However I would say that all these machines are Intel based, on AMD machines I know of no end of problems ... maybe thats a denominator ?
