Just read an article that it is possible to convert analog movies, e.g. VHS tape to digital format by plugging into the analog video input of a digital camcorder and use that for the digital conversion. Run the digital out signal to the PC and you save on a video capture card and/or software file conversion. Has anyone tried that? Seems a pretty neat solution for those already owning a digital camcorder.

If this is workable, what about the audio part? Run it through the analog audio inputs or direct to the PC line input? Will there be synchronisation problem?

Tried it on my old Pc but couldn't get sound to sync with video. That was on a PC running Xp2400 but onboard sound...mothreboard was a couple of years old though.


Going to try again soon on my new Athlon 64 system. Will let you know how I get on

jowl, thanks for the reply. That's the problem I had previously with a cheapo software based video capture card. The video resolution was poor and the sound was out of sync. Just thought this may save me an investment on a hardware video capture/mpeg conversion card.

I don't know about VHS, but with my old Digital 8 I can capture Hi8 (analog) into my PC no problems.

My Sony camera can accept analog video and sound and will quite happily pass that via firewire to my PC.
