new to dvd burning
i just got a pioneer 107 dvd burner for my computer and have some video clips that are avi files and want burn them to disc, my home dvd player(medion md40288) does'nt support avi format, so what program do i need make them compatable with my player? i've got both nero 5 and roxio 6 for burning them, will that give me an option on what i format i want or do i need another program to convert them? if so what is the best format to use?

Mike, i'm trying this too. Got the same burner as you as well! I just got some software from a friend who does rather a lot of dvd burning He gave me Ulead dvd movie factory2. Its fairly easy to use but i'm still having minor problems like getting sound but no picture I can lend you it if you want.

guys,
you are going to have to make sure your .avi files are converted to proper DVD compliant files. the only re-encoder i would recommend is TMPEG. the video stream needs to be mpeg2. it also need to be in the proper format. if you have NTSC ripped files or PAL ripped files they have different frame rates. audio stream needs to be 48KHz to be be DVD compliant as well. the raw dvd compliant audio and video stream then need to be re-muxed into files that you see in the VIDEO_TS folders of a dvd. again, an easy to use program for that would be DVD-lab. also mark@wrx i wouldn't make a habit of telling people you will do them copies of anything, especially not on this board. too many ppls use it and it only takes one to complain to webby. if i was you i would edit the post and remove all references about "doing you a copy". i am actually surprised the mods havent seen this yet and deleted the post.

just saying you need to be careful about offering services that might be considered *ahem cough* slightly illegal. highly unlikely that mr plod will be knocking on your door, but if he does i would get rid of all your "evaluation" software

I use Nero Express and it takes around 4 hours to convert a 700mb AVI file to MPEG2, including burning to DVD.
This is with the NEC 2500 dual layer drive, using a single layer Ritek disc.

TMPGEnc is slower than many others, but it does give very good results and allows you to have mpg2 encoding free for 30 days. Have you set it to CBR or VBR? VBR will pass multiple times over the file to get a better result, but takes much longer. Try CBR. You may also want to encode in Linear PCM audio as the mpg audio was out of sync on some playes I used.
