XP Pro Re-Registration!?!?!?!?
WTF is this all about?
To cut to the chase, I pulled out the old Nvida TNT2 graphics card and replaced it with a slightly better Geforce2 that was lying about. I also pulled out one of the two CD drives (secondary slave) and replaced it with a 60GB hard drive (secondary slave, 58GB NTFS / 2GB NTFS partitions)
Power up the PC, log on and:
"Windows has detected that the hardware has changed significantly since XP was registered, please re-register windows XP you have 3 days left"
FFS! I wouldn't call that a significant change!

LOL Then when you try to re-register it will say "That copy is already activated". You will then go "arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggghhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhh"

Hello
The key that microsoft uses to uniquely identify the machine uses mainly the graphics card apparently. So changing that AND another component would probably make it ask.
Steve.

What is the big problem ? If the machine is on the 'net it takes about 15 seconds to re-register.
Unless of course you have a hooky version, then that can be a little bit more problematic.

All you need to do is call the phone number and get through to talk to a customer service person and read the product ID that will be displayed on your screen, they will then give you another number to type in and hey presto!
They don't even ask why you need to re activate. Even if they do tell them the truth and say you upgraded some hardware.

The copy was genuine, unfortunately I was unable to register on the web so I lost 10 minutes of my life on the soul destroying microsoft phone line
Oh well, all is fine and dandy now apart from cross-threading a screw when I mounted the HDD
