Windows Messenger
How do I get rid of this poxy thing off my computer? I don't have it enabled anywhere and nothing is filled in via OE - yet a few times it has signed me in during the night.

Ditto. I don't have broadband but I get logged on everytime I connect even though I've set not to in the options box.

I had this the other week.
It seemed to only happen since I accepted a Messenger Update message that popped up (I thought it mean't msn messenger, not windows messenger).
I set my msn messenger to not log me on on startup, yet people were messeging me, found it was windows messenger running in the background but i couldn't change the settings for it as there was no icon or running app in task manager for it.
I downloaded windows messenger 5.0 from microsoft, ran it to upgrade my windows messenger, then in the windows messenger settings made sure it wasn't connecting, wasn't loading, and even told windows messenger to connect through some random proxy.
Everythings runs fine now, doesn't load or run or connect on startup

I've managed to get rid of it on my side of the pc but it still pops up on Bob's. I disabled it in control panel and changed some settings in the programme itself but can't remember how or what I did now. I remember that I got the answers from here though
There are ways of getting rid of it completely so if someone can post those up I'd be very grateful too

Just kidding
If you do it bob269s way it will just remove it from the Start menu, but won't actually remove it from Windows. I assume you meant MSN Messenger rather than Windows Messenger ?

I want it removed in it's entirety from my Computer, but it doesn't appear in add/remove programs. I have done all the disable stuff and it makes no frigging difference.

To uninstall Windows Messenger 4.x on your system do not delete the programs files directly instead go
Start > Run, now enter “RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove” into your run box without the speech marks. Although this will remove the second tray icon with will disable some features in MSN Messenger such as remote assistance (period), whiteboard, application sharing plus apps that call on Messenger (like Outlook Express, Outlook 2002) will freeze or parts that rely on Windows Messenger will no longer function. <Click here to disable Windows Messenger rather than remove it>
If you enter the command into the run box the following message will be displayed

Accept this after closing the programs shown; this will then remove the unnecessary Windows Messenger 4.x components. At this point you will be asked to reboot your system.
On next reboot once you have logged on to your system you will be greeted by the following message.

Select yes to allow your personalized settings to be cleaned up and wait for your desktop to load. You now should have only 1 version of Messenger start with Windows.
Removing Windows Messenger 5.0
Go to start > run and enter
msiexec.exe /x {ABEB838C-A1A7-4C5D-B7E1-8B4314B10138}
Windows Messenger 5 will then be automatically removed.
or
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Messenger
In this folder you will find a file called messenger.msi, right click on it and select uninstall. The version number of messenger can be obtained by
opening the main Windows Messenger window and going to Help > About.

I want MSN Messenger to stay [Version 6.2] But Dunk looking at that site it says....
If you require a messenger version capable of connecting to a Microsoft Exchange IM or SIP servers do not uninstall your existing version of messenger from your system
What the hell does that mean?
also
Although this will remove the second tray icon with will disable some features in MSN Messenger such as remote assistance (period), whiteboard, application sharing plus apps that call on Messenger (like Outlook Express, Outlook 2002) will freeze or parts that rely on Windows Messenger will no longer function.
So as I use Outlook Express, that means I can't get rid of it entirely... correct?

You can still use OE fine. It can't be removed totally because:
Microsoft says that Windows Messenger's "Messenger Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)" is necessary for Outlook 2002, Outlook Express 6, and the Remote Assistance feature.

If either of the techniques for removing Windows Messenger don't work for you, the other option is to change the settings in Windows Messenger so that it doesn't always start when Windows starts, and disable the option to automatically sign in. And then for good measure, change your firewall settings so that msmsgs.exe is denied access to the internet.

Bob - it was disabled from Outlook, this is the whole problem Nothing is filled in if I go to Tools > Windows Messenger > Options... all boxes are blank/greyed out and no boxes have ticks in under any of the tabs, but, if I close OE, then re-open it and go to Options for Windows Messenger and go to Preferences, there is always a tick back in 'Allow this program to run in the background'

That's because the Messenger Service (which you have disabled already) and Windows Messenger are different things, despite the similarities in their names.
