Default Laptop SatNav

I'm looking to buy a cheap used laptop (around £100 - £150 on ebay) to use as sat nav. I've heard the part can be added to any laptop to use it as this - the question i'm asking is - would i need a mobile phone connected (does the sat nav need internet connection?)

cheers
