Default Doom3 benchmarks on "normal PC's"

Myself and some m8's are trying to generate a database of Doom3 benchmarks on "normal" machines

Please see: http://www.lanse.co.uk/forums/index....=ST&f=2&t=2581

To main doom3 menu.
Set to "medium" and 1024*768
To advanced options and make sure everything is on. EXCEPT AA & V-Sync
Bring down the console (ctrl+alt+¬)
Type "timedemo demo1" without quotes
Then run it again - post second results

Please report

CPU
MEM
GFX

Eithor register 'n reply at LANSE or reply here & I'll copy the data over.

Cheers

BK

If you like.

By "normal" I mean a gaming rig which doesn't have the mutts nutts of video cards - but something like the 9800XT (and NVIDIA equilivent) and below.

Many people are asking it if will run on their rig. Hopefully these benches will provide the answer.

50.4 fps@1024x768

Intel Pentium 4 'Northwood' 3.0CGHz (800FSB) with HT Technology
OCZ 1GB (2x512MB) PC3500 Dual Channel Series EL-DDR
Hercules 3D Prophet 9800 Pro 128MB DDR (AGP) (drivers from May)

I'll run a timedemo on my laptop later, P4 2 gig mobile with an old (but not bad) gfx card.

Jules

Edited: Oops 41.8fps actually. Didnt spot changing gfx quality drops the rez.

if you want a nice increase in performance in doom3. go to the Doom directory/Base. Find doomconfig.cfg and open in notepad.

Find seta image_cachemegs "32"

Change to 128/256/512. Start at 128 and change to 256 then 512 and see what works best.

I did it and gained 15fps!

I take it then that my current rig needs a bit of an upgrade in order to run Doom 3? Don't want to go buy it and find it unplayable!

2000XP
KR7-A
512 2700 RAM
GF3 Ti

Could I get away with just a GF upgrade to 9800Pro?

I know its not the same but it runs Unreal 2 with everything on, fine. Not sure how to do these timedemo things.

thanks.

Give it a try. At worst you'll play it and it's gash > go buy a new card.

At best it's playable.

It runs OK on my 9600Pro although the 9800Pro's seem to cope much better 15/20 FPS increase.

Results posted soon.

Put it this way - I suspect no one has paid for it but no doubt they happily pay for their broadband to download from certain sites

@Prince Popeye

if you have the original, a backup copy of the game is available for evaluation purposes on Supernova using Bittorrent.

@roadrunner

if you believe half the guff that john carmack et al is saying on some sites then then doom3 should be able to run on an older machine. they say that a ti4400 should be able to run the game in lower resolutions with effects switched of. what's the point in that ffs. ppls who buy doom3 for the gameplay are going to be seriously miffed when they find out it has none.......doom, doom2, ultimate doom.......and now doom3 with more of the same. eye candy is the name of the game and IMHO 95% of the gaming rigs out there are just not going to cut it. i have posted my results and for a system like mine xp3200,raddy9800pro, i think 40fps at 1024x768 on medium setting is pathetic. switch on AA and effects and the game is unplayable. downloading from other sites allows ppls like me to make an informed choice and i for one will NOT be buying the game when it is released in the UK. what is the point in spending £30 on the latest game if you are going to need a £400 video card to play it like the software developers want you to play it. think ID have seriously shot themselves in the foot with one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the year.

just my 2p worth

eh? I was refering to the price fo a gfx card etc to play these games when a £130 console can do an excellent job with none of this messing about.

I'm just saying for the price I don't think you can go wrong with an Xbox.

while i agree the xbox is a nice piece of kit, i will reserve judgement for the xbox release of doom3, it surely will operate at >40fps. i wonder what the resolution and effects will be like on the xbox?

what i am try to get at is that no amount of hardware performance/top notch grafix cards is going to make this game any better. as has been said in another thread, this "jump out and scare me, while i blow your fookin head off" game play just doesnt do it for me anymore. the fact that the game runs sh1te on my computer only adds to my belief that software companies need to do a whole lot more to keep our attention. I am looking forward to S.T.A.L.K.E.R later on this month to see if it is any better.

cheers
