Default Memory Cards

Hi Everybody!

I just ordered a Kodak digital camera. It has only 16 mb so I also ordered a 256 MB Secure Digital card for it.

Whilst I am still waiting for the camera the memory card arrived yesterday.

I have noticed that it is almost exactly the same size as the MMC memory card in my nokia 6600

When I went shopping for the camera I really wanted one with Bluetooth so that I could send images from the camera to the phone and then e-mail them to folks at work to make them jealous ...but no such cameras existed that met my needs.

Having just done a quick search on the web I have found that indeed Secure Digital and MMC are very similar. The Secure Digital card will not fit in my phone - it is too thick but exactly the right shape otherwise.

When the camera arrives does anyone know if an MMC card can be used in a SD slot? This would allow me to copy pics to my phone withouth having to go to an internet cafe.

Cheers

My pocket PC takes both MMC and Sdigital in the same slot. Only diffrence is the encryption which no-one uses anyway.

Thanks for the comment but are they really so similar?

The SD card has a different number of connectors on the back....

major differences between MMC (Multimediacard) and SD
(secure digital card).

SD is an improvement of MMC, released two years after the second.

MMC transfer rate is 16 mbit/s
SD transfer rate is 80 mbit/s

Means that SD cards have superior performances in r/w access than MMC, expecially with devices supporting the full SD transfer rate (USB2 readers, recent PDAs, recent digicams) the improvement is dramatic.

SD are into an electrostatic protected policarbonate.
(more durable than standard MMC pt)

SD cards have special circuit that allow copy protection for OEM distributed products. (for example...software, music, videos or other stuff, directly sold into SD...) anyway, no commercial response yet. (maybe DVD and CD are enough for anyone

MMC does *not* support, copy protection.

SD readers are backward compatible, i mean...SD readers can read SD and MMC cards. MMC readers CANNOT read SD cards.

This is because SD cards/readers have 6 pin + a lower down checksum pin + a dual (probably used for higher transfer rates) split pin (total 9) MMC card have a total of 7 parallel pin.

Last but not least, SD cards have a lock switch on the side that prevents data to be written or deleted.

Also...as easy to imagine...SD are far little espensive than MMC.
