Default Virus help

OK this may have been covered but not sure so.....
I seem to have picked up a virus - the one that makes your PC run slow & also tries to restart the computer whenever I am on the internet.
Not sure which work/virus etc this one is bit think its the one that got a lot of press recently.

How do I get rid of it ? I have no virus software to mention - lesson learned there, & don't want to spend loads on fancy ant-virus software that wont do the job of removing this particular one.
Is there any free software on the net that I could throw at it ?
I tried Stinger or Zinger (??) which I downloaded free but it didn't do a thing.

Any other suggestions ?

Any help appreciated

Try AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php); a free antivirus tool. With regards to the current problem... is the PC fully patched (i.e. everything WindowsUpdate tells you that is needed)? Does Windows return any unusual messages when it's running slow or trying to reboot?

Thanks mate - will try.
I get a window with some text & a count-down from around 60 secs - when it gets to zero it re-boots the system. The text says something about the system shutting down - I could get the exact message if that helps.

If I go to control panel & do "shutdown -a" it stops it but its not a cure by any means.

That sounds to me like blaster worm (or a variant) which invultrates RPC.

You need the M$ patch for it. I'd recommend getting the patch applied to solve your problem and then get all your Windows updates applied and then keeping them updated regually, also get a virus scanner and a firewall (if you have not already done so)
