Default Why you shouldn't drop a brand new 3.0Ghz Processor

(56k user beware - big image)

Brand new 3.0Ghz 800FSB P4 Processor. Received it tonight. Opended the case and it flew out and dropped about 4ft onto my hard floor. That's £140 down the drain

If any thinks they can fix it I'm open to any offers to buy it off me....i know it won't be much though.....gutted

If none of the pins are broken you should be able to bend them back if you very careful, maybe heat the pins slightly to make it easier. I'd give it a go before selling it if I were you.

Even if you do break one it should still work if you can put some wire in the socket.

Si,

Yeah but when i return it they'll see the 'non-perfectly-straight' pins and reject it I'd imagine.....

I've done it myself. Its very soft metal and easy to bend. U got nothing to loose.

You'll probably find your PC runs alot faster because you've altered the processor's dynamics..

A fair amount of work, but certainly possible - and not even particularly difficult with a good pair of tweezers. If you think that's hard try fixing tracks on the motherboard after the previous owner put a screwdriver throught them. or just unlocking old Athlons.

I'll give you £20 for it...

I'll give you £20.01 for it

Fixed much worse than that before had one that had a size 9 placed on top on tiled floor. Lot of patience required and a good pair of fine nosed pliers.

A guy at work once received a rack of 80 1Mb Simms (Shows the age there...).
He dropped the lot !

In an attempt to 'not' step on them, he reactively wheeled his chair back - - and ran over most of them.....

About 12 survived.... DOH !!

Are you sure its damaged internally. I've bent plenty of legs on CPUs in work but get them roughly back in line and is all is well.

Agree with the track business! Unlocking an AMD 2000XP was a right pain.

Has somome already tried to fix that? Because some of that damage looks like it was caused by a soldering iron. And has at least one component gone as well? If so you're on your own mate! But it looks a bit too much for me: I only had to do four tracks when I fixed my motherboard and that took a hour. But if the alternative is just to chuck it away I can take a look, but absolutely no promises. As you probably found out, fixing it professionally is unlikely to be economic.

It was me and my fat fingers mate Suppose its a lesson hard-learnt... do not attempt to solder anything after a LONG day at work and having consumed several beers

I've since repaired the Xbox with a new board... thought that this one might make a nice project... Apparently the memory chips can be removed and re-used.. and maybe other parts?

DJ Dunk has first dabs anyway. I prefer to let people know what they're getting off me.

I tried carefully, then lost my patience and began stabbing the board with the iron hence the result.

Ever break a cpu pin off of the cpu?
if so, this may help
I take no responsibility for any damage done to you, your equipment, or your friends who are watching you do this.

Things needed:
ur cpu that will not work due to a broken off pin
the motherboard u want to use that cpu in
an old ethernet cable, or any wire with thin solid (non-twined) wire in it
a good sense of length.
pliers

1) Strip the wire you have

2) cut off a piece approximately the length of a cpu pin.

3) Place that piece of wire sticking up in the hole of the cpu socket that corresponds to the missing pin on the cpu.
(if it doesn't fit, either grind it down(pliers work) or find a smaller wire)

4) place the cpu in the socket

5) have fun with ur pc again

side notes, if more than one pin are broken off in close proximity (next to eachother) make sure that the wires do not touch when the cpu is pressed in, or you may end up with more dead parts than you started out with.

If this helps anyone all credit goes to my friend, Andrew Stein
he actually performed this operation during a lan party after he accidentally broke a second pin off of his cpu.

The best thing to do with duff mothernboards is the re-flow them in the oven.

My mates ex g/f used to work for a PCB manuafcturer and anything electronic that had packed in and had no obvious faulty components...would just drop it off there and ask her to shove it in the PCB oven and reflow the joints, most of the time it worked!

Unfortunately it's now "ex" so no longer have access to such facilities
