or just do this...
Anyone with Windows XP or above will have seen them - those damn annoying Messenger Service pop-ups that appear everytime you are on the internet. Some of them even have the cheek of offering to tell you how to stop them - with a premium rate number to call for the info
Read on and I'll tell you how to stop them for FREE!
First off though, the very fact that you are getting these messages tells me that you are not using any form of firewall on our PC. Your PC is effectively advertising its presence on the internet and inviting unwelcome visitors to come and have a nose around. It is even holding the door open for them!!
An effective firewall is a must, especially if you are using an 'Always On' connection (ADSL or Cable broadband)
There are many many firewalls available, some cost a few quid, some considerably more and some are free. One of the most popular ones is ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com) and believe it or not it is also one of the free ones. Whats more it is also one of the simplest to set up and configure.
Another thing to note here - these messages are nothing to do with MSN or Windows Messenger chat programs. Disabling the pop-ups will not affect your use of either of these programs.
The culprit is the Windows Network Messenger Service, which is designed to allow system administrators send system messages to all users on their network. Microsoft (bless them) felt it necessary to enable this service by default, although for the majority of home PC users it is totally unnecessary.
So, to get rid of these annoying pop-ups:
You will need to be logged on with Administrative priveleges
Click on Start
Click on Run
In the box, type Services.msc then click OK
In the new window that opens, scroll down until you find Messenger
Double click the entry to open its Properties page
Click on Stop
Use the Startup type drop down list and choose Disabled
Click on Apply, then OK
