Angry Another Outlook Express question

I copied all my messages as described by Darlodge [url="http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showpost.php?p=3421508&postcount=2"]]HERE because of my PC going away to be repaired.

I have now tried to export them back in and only a few of them and not all of the folders appear now.

Anyway to retrieve them all and reinstate them? They seem to be saved as .dbx format and all of them and the folders I had, show in the OE file they were saved in or is there any programme that will open and read .dbx files?

I'm sorry to hear it did not work. I've used this method hundreds of times and never, once have I known it to fail. But that's the thing with computers, they are totally un predictable

Which folders did not copy back in again and which ones did import again?

What version of OE are you NOW running?

For future use, I recommend a different approach. OE allows you to store e-mails wherever you want, so I create a directory ("e-mails"!) on another drive and then point OE at it. I also copy the current address book to the same directory. I then just back up that directory with a standard proggie like Nero. If I have to re-install, I put the e-mails directory back on the D: drive then point the new install of OE at it. You'll still need to copy the address book back to the correct location though.

Works fine and is easier to back up than exporting from OE. AFAIK it can be done retrospectively: just copy the contents of C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{07782F03-896F-4AC4-9013-90144FBE581D}\Microsoft\Outlook Express (obviously the number in the middle will be different, and this is for 2k or later) to a new directory as above then point to it from OE.

My instructions do state that exporting messages is a bit hit and miss, thats why I recommend copying the entire Store folder.

I have not given up just yet, I still have a few ideas up my sleve

Yeah I do the same & keep my Mail folder in My Documents.
Sometimes when you change the location of the store folder the old messages don't appear in OE until you have hit Send/Receive.

When you are fairly hardcore overclocker like me you generally assume that the OS will get hosed at least three times a year, and everything on the C: drive lost. Which is why I use another drive!
