Post Frustrating modem problem - no dial tone detected

This is actually a customers machine, and they brought it to me with what they thought was a defective external serial modem.

I have removed all viruses, reinstalled windows (as viruses had corrupted files etc) - still no joy

I have installed a PCI modem - still no dial tone detected

I have also now tried a USB external modem - and still no joy

Any ideas on what could be causing this???? I guess its some kind of conflict somewhere, but i'm fooked if i can find it

Cheers

Which op system? Did you do a fresh Win install or just install over the top? Do the control panel modem diagnostics work? Which virus(es) did it have? Are all the system devices in device manager happy?

Do you have a message waiting on 1571? That used to make my modem do the same.
Try changing the setting in the control panel/phone and modem options so that it doesn't wait for a dial tone before dialing.

load up hyper terminal, set it to use the modem type in :
at
<press enter>

atx3
<press enter>

atdt <number>
<press enter>

Should dial out,

also can use the at&f , which is the normal initialize code, atx3 ignores dial tone..

if that works using atx3, go to custom properties for the dialup account, and type in atx3

I had a recent problem with a dial-up modem. Like you it wouldn't detect a dialtone properly.

AT commands worked fine in HyperTerminal, but no joy using Windows dial-up. I could've use the custom commands as Christian suggests, but I managed to find a newer driver from the manufacturers website and this fixed the problem.

It's worth checking those out just in case.

Thanks guys,

Unfortunately those suggestions didn't work either , as the motherboard has been detected at fault (customer does not want the expense of a change). I suggested an external serial modem, which now works perfectly.

Kind regards
