Windows 2000 problem.
Have had the requirement to up a Windows 2000 from 256mb memory to 512. However, windows 2000 bluescreens when trying to boot with 512 in. Its not the new module, as it boots fine with ONLY the new one. BIOS reads the 512 fine (and apparently should support it no sweat).
Windows 2000 was installed on that machine when it only had 128mb. Has since been SP'd up to 4 etc.
Is there a special switch needed in the boot.ini or something (vague memory of a problem with that size memory, but i think it was server orientated)?

nope, shouldn't need to do anything other than physically adding the extra RAM.
Are both modules the same type and have you played with banks to see if it needs the RAM installed in a certain order.
Does the BIOS see all the modules before it starts W2K?

It is a b'astard Dell machine! Have used this memory in other Dell machines fine. Maybe it is just a case of it not liking the 2 together, BUT it says it can only do 512mb by using 2x 256.
The memory does work fine in other machines, and the BIOS shows both modules (and passes the FULL post test).
Win2k BSODs right at the point where the "screen" (with mouse cursor) would normally spring into life. In safe mode also

if you have another dell on site, swipe the memory out of a that one and put in your dodgy stick, then stick the two kingston dell 256k in the upgrade machine and keep your fingers crossed
could of guest it was dell, they have gone down the same route as Compaq, if you want to upgrade you need to use their products....... *******s
take a look at the new 270sx's don't fancy upgrading one of them
