WTF does this mean?
Email to a particular address keeps bouncing with the following error:
550-Invalid HELO (Xxxxxx) used by
62.249.xxx.xxx. See RFC1123 s5.2.5 and
(there follows a trasnscript of the message header)
I thought 550 indicated relaying denied?

550 is a relaying error.
We had an issue where some system had our IP address listed as an open relay (although it wasn't) in a shared database (basically a black-list). The client we tried to send mail to rejected any e-mails that were on this black-list database. I can't for the life of me remeber the company that runs this type of service though
Do a MX lookup on the domain you're sending mail to and note the mail servers IP addresses.
Then do a Telnet on port 25 and try the HELO command. It may give you more details to help identify the problem.
