Default Burning DVD Movies

Hi Folks, let's just say for example that I am new to the world of computers.
I want to be able to download movies from my camcorder and burn my own DVDs.
The file come down in .avi format.
I have a DVD-RW drive and some software that allows me to create Data DVDs, but this doesn't help me, i think. The software I have is Easy CD creator 5 basic from Roxio which was bundled with my pc.

1. I need to buy some DVD-RW discs - ok I think I can manage this.
2. Convert the .avi to a DVD format - HELP!!
3. Burn the DVD - HELP!!

I use Pinnacle Studio. It does it all for you - captures the video from camcorder in AVI and then allows you to create a DVD disc, adding menus, soundtracks, voice overs, etc..

That's a good question. I'll need to check because I'm still playing with it myself.

Welcome to the world of home DVD making! I started this way with an all-in-one package. They are very good for getting stuck in quickly and can give great results. If you want to get into it deeper, like I'm trying to do, you can start to choose different programs for different jobs (editing, encoding, authoring, burning) that allow you to be more creative and give you what you want. It's a great hobby.

Most home DVD burning apps won't set a region code. Is there any reason why you want to, concidering most DVD players can now be region free?

Cheers

Fig,

I think he's asking about home moveis from a camcorder, not DVD ripping... People always seems to assume that when you talk about making DVD that you are trying to rip commercial DVDs .I find it more fun making my own from scratch...

Nimbus, my dvd player is not region free, but I can test it out and see what happens.
I intend to wire my pc into my Projector anyway, so it probably won't matter.

Thanks Fig, when do we start our DVD piracy empire I reckon I can burn up to 1 DVD per day, when should we go global?

Hail,

I think you will find that there's no region coding option so it should play fine on (almost) anything.

I can do the cover sleeves at a rate of one every three days, so we'll soon be minted.

[I get the feeling this thread may be taking a short journey sometime soon]

I don't think MF3 will allow you to change the speed of the video or add audio overlays or additional tracks (but could be wrong). For this you need a proper NLE (Non-Linier Editor). I used to use Premiere that came with my capture card, but have started using Vegas. It's very easy to use and has lots of nice features.

I would go for Cyberlinks PowerDirector 3, I've just used it for capturing my mini DVD to DVD-RW, very good indeed.

Visual Studio 7, which is packaged with most Leadtek TV capture cards, produces really good quality captures.

MF3 is a by-product of the above and is inferior imo. Also doesn't keep the 16:9 screen format, say from a digital tv capture, whereas VS7 does.
