Question Why does my dialup pc keep dropping its connection?

I have an old dial up pc that I use for checking emails etc but it keeps dropping the connection while sending an email this morning and recently while using the 'net

I was downloading something from microsofts site and it crashed out again

This is getting very annoying.

What could it be?

Is my modem at fault? Problem with the pc? Where do I start?

Thanks in advance for your help

Paul

Stupid answer time, but you don't have the dialup changer virus that was flying about weeks ago ??

You dont have the "disconnect when sent" option turned on in Outlook do you? This will drop your connection each time you send emails if you do.

As said, proberbly something to do with call waiting on your line/extension. The warning bleep will cause the line to drop.

Oh well nothing I can do about it. It's just frustrating when it does it.

Thanks

Paul,

Try dialing #43# from your phone before dialing up, then *43# when finished.

That disables Call Waiting then see if it improves.

HTH,

Chris.

If it's not call waiting, likely other causes are the modem itself or a poor line connection. Have you another BT socket that you can try.

Has it just started to do this or has it always?

It's only started recently I have another modem that I may try. It'd be ironic if it was a poor line, I work for Telewest and it's one of our own internal phone lines

contact BT and get them to check line quality and maybe turn up Gain on line, As noise on line can cause this especialy on extensions or shared line

Yeh I was going to say the same. I had dialip dropouts due to noise on the line causing the 56k modem to throw a wobbler. Just ask BT (FOC) to increase the gain (volume) a couple of clicks. If ya lucky it will improve your connect speed to. B4 I had this done I could barely get a 44,000bps connection. Now I always get at least a 49,333bps connection.
